Kono Speaks

  • Course
  • 2 Lessons

I met Tommy Kono in 2006 and talked him into teaching a workshop at my gym. It became a yearly tradition until he passed in 2016, two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the greatest lifters who ever lived, still wanting to share into his mid-eighties. One time I filmed it. Part 1 is his workshop. Part 2, he just tells stories. Slow, deliberate, steeped in 85 years of life. Come sit at the feet of a master.

What this is

A record of a day that isn't coming back. Kono died in 2016, and this footage is the only place that particular workshop exists.

Part 1 is him teaching, working through the lifts the way he taught them for decades. Part 2 is him talking: the internment camp, the training, the era he came up in, whatever he felt like telling that afternoon.

It's not a program to follow. It's an afternoon with someone worth listening to.

What's in it?

  • Part 1: the workshop, Kono teaching - runtime 37:54

  • Part 2: the stories, unscripted - runtime 32:44

Who it's for

Lifters who know the name and never got to see him work. There aren't many chances left to watch someone from that generation teach in their own words.

It also suits anyone interested in where strength training came from, and anyone who's noticed that the people who were genuinely great at this rarely sound like the people selling it now.

You don't need to lift Olympic style to get something out of it. Chip's whole approach traces back partly to this man, so if you've trained with BodyTribe material, this is some of where it came from.

About Chip

Learn from someone who's been questioning fitness dogma for 30+ years. Chip has trained with legends like Tommy Kono and Mel Siff, coached athletes internationally, and run a brick-and-mortar gym for nearly 20 years. Thirty years in, what he teaches isn't a program. It's the thinking behind one. He doesn't just hand you the workout; he hands you the reasoning, so you can eventually write your own.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a workout program?

No. Part 1 is a workshop, so there's real teaching in it, but this is footage of a master at work rather than a program to run.

Do I need to be an Olympic lifter?

No. Plenty of it is about how to think and how to teach, which travels regardless of what you lift..

How long is it?

Two videos. Over 30 minutes each.

How long do I have access?

Forever. You buy it once and it stays in your library.

Prefer the whole kit and kaboodle?

Kono Speaks is also part of the All Access Pass. For $19/month you get this, every Integrate program, and everything else BodyTribe offers, plus the community spaces.
